Surgical Associates, headquartered in Wausau, WI, is a multi-disciplinary team of 16 surgeons and more than 70 highly trained staff that operate in central and northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Their specialties consist of bariatric, breast, general, trauma, plastic and vascular surgeries. Surgical Associates is an independent practice, owned by the surgeons, and managed by their CEO, Mike Murphy.

The Three-Legged Stool

According to Murphy, Surgical Associates has achieved tremendous growth due to a commitment to what he calls “the three-legged stool belief”. As he puts it, “If we take care of our patients, our surgeons, and our staff, the finances will take care of themselves.” Murphy also believes that their commitment to regional healthcare has also contributed to the growth of Surgical Associates. In fact, the team operates from clinics located in Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Merrill, Antigo, Medford, Rhinelander, Woodruff and Iron River, MI in addition to multiple locations in the Wausau area.


A Year Of Many Challenges


In what Murphy refers to as a “year of many challenges”, Surgical Associates has demonstrated a knack for thinking ahead, being nimble, and even growing revenue through added services. In 2019, they applied for AAAHC Accreditation, a rigorous process that reviews the clinic’s quality standards and practices for care and services. It’s so rigorous that many clinics don’t even bother to apply. This accreditation has prepared them for virtually any challenge, including pandemics. But amidst the disruptions, has come opportunities.

Those opportunities include Elevé MedSpa, a new 11,000 square foot MedSpa featuring two state-of-the-art operating rooms and 12 exam rooms providing plastic surgery, skin and aesthetic care, vitality programs, laser vein treatment among other services. And yes, Elevé MedSpa will be AAAHC Accredited also. According to Murphy, the multi-million dollar facility began taking shape in early 2019 and is an affordable alternative to other Medical Spas mostly found in more urban areas.
