What is Giving Tuesday?
Started in 2012, Giving Tuesday is all about…well…giving. The idea behind it is to create a movement around the world dedicated to generosity – a particularly important follow-up to the shopping craze that occurs just a few days before on Black Friday.
It’s about donating time, money, goods, or even your voice, toward a cause that is meaningful to you in your community.
And as you might expect, its impact is massive. In 2022, Giving Tuesday generated over $3billion in the US alone, a 15% increase over 2021.
When is Giving Tuesday?
Well technically, Giving Tuesday is every Tuesday. However, it’s celebrated annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving.
In 2023, Giving Tuesday’s annual celebration takes place on November 28th.
How does Giving Tuesday work?
For nonprofit organizations, Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to gather supporters and promote generosity. And despite the name, it’s less about soliciting donations – it’s about inspiring people to give to the causes that are meaningful to them.
Nonprofits can benefit from creating volunteer opportunities, providing a fun and easy way to donate money or goods, providing education about your cause, and using the hashtag #GivingTuesday.
Giving Tuesday is a great reason to contribute to a cause you care about. That could mean donating to a local food pantry, volunteering your time delivering meals, or even simply helping your neighbor with yardwork.
